Airbnb Temporary Phone Numbers: The 2-Day Cutoff

The phone number on your next Airbnb reservation may not belong to your guest. On some US and Canadian bookings, Airbnb assigns both the guest and the host a temporary number once the reservation is confirmed, relays calls and texts through it, and switches it off two days after checkout (Airbnb Help Center). Very little changes while the guest is in the house. Afterward, the phone line to that guest closes on Airbnb's schedule rather than yours.
The timing matters. On September 28, 2026, Booking.com stopped sending guest phone numbers to the property management systems and channel managers connected to it, worldwide (Smoobu). Two of the largest booking platforms now keep a guest's real number out of the host's software, each by a different route. What follows covers how Airbnb's temporary numbers behave, where they break existing workflows, and what to adjust before your next checkout.
Key facts
- Airbnb issues temporary numbers to guests and hosts after a home reservation is confirmed, so the two can call or text without exposing personal numbers (Airbnb Help Center).
- Availability is limited to a small number of users in the United States and Canada. Reservations involving a guest or host outside those countries do not get one, and Airbnb says more markets will be added over time (Airbnb).
- Each number works from confirmation until two days after checkout; after that, Airbnb Messenger is the remaining channel (Airbnb).
- Calls and SMS bill like ordinary calls on your plan. WhatsApp is not supported (Airbnb).
- Real phone numbers shared through Airbnb's messages, emails, or listing fields may be blocked or replaced with the temporary number (Airbnb).
- Airbnb still provides the last four digits of the guest's real number in the reservation details, for door codes (Airbnb).
- The guest phone number shortcut in quick replies has been removed, and templates that used it will not send until they are edited (Airbnb).
- Booking.com stopped passing guest phone numbers to connected software on September 28, 2026, though hosts can still view the number in the Extranet and the Pulse app (Smoobu).
How Airbnb's temporary phone numbers work
A temporary number is a relay. Each side dials or texts a number Airbnb controls, and Airbnb connects it to the real phone on the other end. Caller ID on the receiving phone may read "Airbnb guest" or "Airbnb host," and no internet connection is required (Airbnb Help Center).
Routing depends on Airbnb recognizing the phone that is calling. When a call arrives from a number not linked to the reservation, the caller hears a prompt: guests enter the number of any guest on the booking, while hosts enter their own number, a co-host's number, or the confirmation code, each followed by the pound key. A text from an unrecognized phone triggers an automatic reply asking for the confirmation code (Airbnb). Co-hosts can identify themselves with their own numbers. A housekeeper or handyman calling from a personal phone has no such shortcut unless someone has given them the confirmation code.
The window has a fixed end. Airbnb keeps the numbers active for two days past checkout, explicitly so that forgotten items can be sorted out, and then retires them (Airbnb). A guest's phone number also never appears before a reservation is confirmed, and it drops out of the reservation details if the booking is canceled (Airbnb Help Center).
Who has temporary numbers today
Fewer hosts than the forum threads imply. Airbnb's help page still describes availability as limited to a small number of users in the US and Canada, and that was the wording on the page when we read it on October 20, 2026 (Airbnb).
The rollout has been visible for about a year. In September 2025, a host on the OwnerRez forum reported that Airbnb would begin replacing guest numbers on September 30, and OwnerRez staff replied that Airbnb had described the change as limited to a small number of hosts without an API connection (OwnerRez forum). Six days later, Hospitable published a changelog explaining how its lock codes would handle temporary numbers on Airbnb reservations, using a new attribute from Airbnb that carries the guest's real last four digits (Hospitable).
Eligibility is decided reservation by reservation. Because a booking involving anyone outside the US or Canada is excluded (Airbnb), one listing can host a guest from Toronto on a temporary number one week and a guest from London on a real number the next. Check your own reservations rather than assuming either way.
What changes for hosts
Phone contact ends two days after checkout
Two days is enough to mail back a forgotten charger. It is not enough for a ring a cleaner finds behind a nightstand on day three, or for a conversation about a broken fixture that surfaces after the next guest arrives. Once the numbers expire, everything runs through Airbnb Messenger (Airbnb), and damage reimbursement requests already have to go through Airbnb's Resolution Center under its payment policy (Airbnb).
Door codes and smart locks
Phone-based lock codes are where operations break first. Airbnb supplies the guest's real last four digits for exactly this purpose (Airbnb), but lock software has to know which field to read. Hospitable's approach shows the nuance: four-digit codes built from the guest's phone use Airbnb's real last four digits and fall back to the temporary number only when those digits are missing, longer phone-based codes come from the temporary number, random codes are unaffected, and Vrbo, Booking.com, and direct reservations still use the real number (Hospitable). Other tools may behave differently. Find out before a guest is standing at a keypad that rejects the code you sent.
Saved replies and templates
Any quick reply built on the guest phone number shortcut will fail to send until it is rewritten (Airbnb). Software outside Airbnb deserves the same audit. One host on the OwnerRez forum pointed out that OwnerRez pre-populates the cell phone field on its rental agreements with the number received from Airbnb (OwnerRez forum). Wherever a tool copies the Airbnb number into a document or message, a temporary number would land there too, and it stops working two days after checkout.
Repeat guests
The larger loss is quieter. A phone number was one of the last informal threads between a host and a past guest, and Airbnb's rules had already narrowed what hosts can do with it: no communicating off-platform before a booking, no links that send people away from Airbnb, no discounts for booking elsewhere, and no rebooking an existing reservation off the platform (Airbnb). Temporary numbers turn that boundary into infrastructure. Our breakdown of what Airbnb allows in email marketing covers the rules in more depth.
Booking.com is moving the same way
Booking.com reached a similar outcome by a different mechanism. Since September 28, 2026, it no longer sends guest phone numbers to connectivity providers such as channel managers and property management software, anywhere in the world. Numbers received before the change stay in your records, but a modification to an older reservation now arrives without one, and the real number remains visible in the Extranet and the Pulse app (Smoobu). The stated reason is fraud: Booking.com presents the change as protection against phishing that misuses guest contact details (Mews).
The distinction is worth holding onto. Airbnb replaces the number itself; Booking.com withholds it from your software while still showing it to you inside its own tools. In both cases the guest's phone number stops flowing into the systems a host actually runs the business on.
What to do before your next checkout
- Search your Airbnb quick replies and any scheduled messages in your PMS for the guest phone shortcut or a phone field, and rewrite them.
- Generate a test lock code for an upcoming Airbnb reservation and confirm which digits your lock software used. If it builds codes longer than four digits from the phone number, consider switching to random codes.
- Put every essential instruction (check-in steps, Wi-Fi, parking, the emergency contact) in the Airbnb message thread, where it survives the cutoff. A pre-arrival message sequence covers most of it without manual effort.
- Ask cleaners to report found items the same day, so any call to the guest happens inside the two-day window.
- Give anyone who calls guests from an unlinked phone the confirmation code, or route those calls through a host or co-host number.
- For Booking.com reservations, move workflows that depended on the phone number, such as door codes sent by text, into platform messaging, as Smoobu recommends (Smoobu).
Where a direct relationship still lives
Every reservation that arrives through a platform now carries contact details the platform decides how long you keep. A booking made on your own website does not. The guest gives their information to you at checkout, under your own privacy policy, with no expiry tied to a checkout date. Building that channel inside Airbnb's rules means earning a guest's attention somewhere other than the Airbnb thread; re-booking past guests through your direct channel walks through the compliant routes, and owning the guest relationship explains why it compounds.
Holding guest numbers yourself brings its own obligations. Under the TCPA, autodialed marketing texts generally require the recipient's prior express written consent; the FCC's stricter one-to-one consent rule never took effect after the Eleventh Circuit vacated it in January 2025 (Morrison Foerster). Before launching any SMS program, run the consent language past counsel.
Haven builds branded direct booking websites for short-term rental hosts. They sync with property management systems such as OwnerRez and Hospitable, and Haven charges no booking commission.
FAQ
Can Airbnb hosts see a guest's real phone number?
On reservations without a temporary number, the guest's real number appears in the reservation details once the booking is confirmed (Airbnb Help Center). On reservations with one, Airbnb shows only the last four digits of the real number, intended for door codes (Airbnb).
How long does an Airbnb temporary phone number last?
It works from the moment the reservation is confirmed until two days after checkout. After that, the number stops connecting and Airbnb Messenger remains available (Airbnb).
Does an Airbnb temporary number work with WhatsApp?
No. Temporary numbers support standard calls and SMS only (Airbnb).
Why can't my cleaner reach my Airbnb guest?
A call or text from a phone not linked to the reservation will not connect automatically. The caller is prompted for a linked phone number or the confirmation code, and a text gets a reply asking for the code (Airbnb).
Does Booking.com hide guest phone numbers too?
From connected software, yes. Since September 28, 2026, Booking.com no longer sends guest phone numbers to channel managers or property management systems, but hosts can still see them in the Extranet and the Pulse app (Smoobu).
