Take the tour
Peek into the bungalows, wander the garden path, step through the boathouse and out onto the deck where the ladder drops into the sea.
180° of ocean
Evenings here belong to the sky. Carry a drink up the stairs, settle in, and watch the bay turn gold, then pink, then violet.
Shared spaces
Past the bungalows, the boathouse is the heart of the place: an airy kitchen, dining room and lounge built out over the sea, shared by all three bungalows.
Straight into the sea
The water starts where the deck ends. Climb down for a morning swim, float until you have had enough, then dry off in a hammock with the islands on the horizon.
From your host
Welcome to Boathouse Bungalows by the Sea.
We are small on purpose: three bungalows, one boathouse and a garden between them, right on the water and a short walk from town. There is no lobby and no front desk, just a gate, a path and the sea.
We live nearby, and our manager is on hand day to day to help you settle in, point you to the best snorkeling of the week, or book you a boat out to Zapatilla. The rest, from the hammocks to the ladder off the deck to the sunsets from the upper deck, is yours to enjoy at your own pace.
Come as you are. We can't wait to welcome you aboard.

The best time to visit Bocas del Toro depends on what you want from the water, because there is no truly dry month to aim for. The archipelago sits on Panama's Caribbean side and has no predictable dry season: rain falls in every month. March is the driest month in every dataset we compared, December is usually the wettest, and several sources describe a calmer spell in September and October, out of step with the rest of Panama. Surfers come from December to April; turtle-watchers come in the middle of the year.
Two long-run datasets show the pattern, and how much it varies. The first two columns are modelled averages from weather2travel; the third is the 1971–2000 station record for Bocas Town, from World Meteorological Organization normals.
| Month | Rainfall (modelled) | Rainy days (modelled) | Rainfall (station record, 1971–2000) |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 211 mm | 12 | 124 mm |
| February | 143 mm | 9 | 266 mm |
| March | 135 mm | 8 | 84 mm |
| April | 185 mm | 9 | 369 mm |
| May | 242 mm | 18 | 178 mm |
| June | 221 mm | 21 | 259 mm |
| July | 280 mm | 22 | 420 mm |
| August | 247 mm | 23 | 441 mm |
| September | 163 mm | 21 | 311 mm |
| October | 199 mm | 22 | 151 mm |
| November | 299 mm | 20 | 292 mm |
| December | 323 mm | 18 | 564 mm |
The two agree on March and on a wet end to the year, and differ on much of what lies between. A single year in a Caribbean archipelago can look nothing like the average, so plan for showers whatever the month and keep a flexible day or two in your trip.
The main surf season begins in December and runs until April, with the biggest swell in December and January; February and March are consistent, sunnier and less crowded. This is also peak season for crowds and prices, and New Year and Carnival are among the most important dates in the Bocas tourism calendar. March is usually the driest month of the year.
April is a shoulder month, with fewer crowds and better prices, and the surf eases. Rain builds through May and June. Leatherback turtles nest from mid-February to July, most of all in May, and guided turtle walks at Bluff Beach run from April to August.
These are among the rainiest months by number of wet days, but they bring a second surf season, with July swell that can rival December and January. Turtle nesting peaks in July and August, when hawksbill and green turtles are also coming ashore. The Sea Turtle Conservancy lists Bluff Beach as a nesting site for leatherbacks, hawksbills and greens between March and October.
In many years the weather settles early in the autumn. Several sources describe September and October as a relatively dry period in Bocas, and some report the clearest snorkeling water then, though other guides disagree, so treat it as a tendency rather than a promise. The Feria del Mar, Bocas Town's annual sea fair, takes place in September; in 2025 it ran from September 12 to 21. Prices are at their lowest.
November is Panama's month of patriotic holidays, on November 3, 4, 5, 10 and 28, and Bocas adds its own: Bocas del Toro Day, on November 16, marks the founding of the province in 1903 with a parade on Isla Colón. On November 2, the Day of the Dead, alcohol sales are banned in the province. It is also one of the wettest months, and a shoulder month for prices.
We price around the same calendar. Low season runs from April 16 to December 14, when the Yellow and Orange Bungalows are $69 a night and Purple is $99, and monthly stays cost $800 or $1,000 per 30 nights. High season runs from December 15 to April 15, at $89 and $125 a night. Holiday dates cost more, and every stay has a three-night minimum. See the bungalows and rates.
Whatever the month, pack a light rain jacket and a dry bag for the water taxis, and leave one day loose for the weather to decide. Once you have your dates, our guide to getting to Bocas del Toro covers the flights, buses and boats.
Not a predictable one. Rain falls in every month; March is usually the driest, and September and October are often calmer than the months around them.
December, in every record we compared, with November close behind in most of them. July and August have the most rainy days in some datasets.
