Three villas, two islands, one host

Michael Mathieu owns three villas in the Caribbean and hosts every stay himself. Résidence du Cap looks over Rodney Bay from the hills of Cap Estate in Saint Lucia; Villa del Mar and Villa Sea La Vie share the hill at Pelican Key in Sint Maarten, a walk above Simpson Bay. Each has a private pool, air-conditioned en-suite bedrooms, a kitchen that cooks, a terrace built around the sunset, and a host who answers the phone, drives over when something needs fixing and knows which fisherman to buy from.

A note from Michael

I bought these houses because I wanted to spend time in them, and I run them the way I would want a place run if I were the one arriving: the keys ready, the fridge cold, the water hot, someone to call who picks up. On Saint Lucia I will probably meet you at the gate myself. On Sint Maarten, Peaches looks after the villas when I am not on the island, and she has been known to chase a taxi down for a lost phone.

Each villa has the things I would want: a serious kitchen, a sound system worth turning up, a pool to swim in before breakfast and a terrace for the evening. The rest, the fisherman to buy from, the beach for the day, the restaurant that is worth the drive, I will tell you when you book.

The north of the island

Cap Estate, Rodney Bay and the coast

Saint Lucia’s north is where the island is easiest: calm west-coast beaches, Rodney Bay’s marina and restaurants, Pigeon Island’s fort and lawns, and two championship golf courses in the hills of Cap Estate, the gated estate where the villa sits. The rest of the island is a day out: the rainforest and the Pitons to the south, Marigot Bay halfway down, the drive-in volcano at Soufrière. Hewanorra International is an hour and a half by road; George F. L. Charles in Castries is twenty minutes.

Résidence du Cap sits on a hillside in Cap Estate, the quiet gated end of Saint Lucia’s north, with the whole coastline laid out below it: Pigeon Island in the foreground, Rodney Bay and Gros Islet beyond, and on a clear afternoon the Pitons on the horizon. The main house has three bedrooms over two floors, the guest cottage a fourth; each has air conditioning, an en-suite bathroom and a private balcony turned toward the water. Downstairs is a kitchen built for cooking properly, with a Sub-Zero fridge and a Bertazzoni range, a dining table for eight, and a living room with a Natuzzi sectional, a 65-inch screen and a sound system worth using. Outside: the pool, several places to eat and sit, a gas and a charcoal grill, and the sunset, which is different every evening. The property is fenced and monitored, Starlink keeps the internet fast, and Pigeon Point Beach is five minutes away, Rodney Bay ten, and two championship golf courses closer than that.

Getting there

Cap Estate, Gros Islet

Fly into Hewanorra (UVF) in the south, about ninety minutes by road, or George F. L. Charles (SLU) in Castries, twenty minutes away. Michael can arrange a transfer; a rental car is useful for the south. Pigeon Point Beach is five minutes, Rodney Bay under ten.
