Stocklycke sits at the foot of Omberg’s western slopes, beside the glittering water of Lake Vättern, deep inside the nature reserve. Once home to the forest keepers, it is now a homely hostel for walkers, seekers and dreamers. Sixteen private rooms, a shared kitchen, a café, and fireplaces to sit beside with a book after a day outside. The accommodation is deliberately simple, which allows the surrounding nature to remain the experience.

Why it is in the collection Some places ask you to do more. Omberg asks you to do less. Stocklycke does not compete with the reserve around it — it gets out of the way of it. Sanctuary is found here in simplicity: a bed, a fire, a shared kitchen, and old-growth forest starting at the door. The rooms Sixteen rooms across the property, all of them private — a reservation books the whole room for you and your group. Showers and toilets are shared and reached easily from the rooms. Bed linen and towels are added as an extra when you book. Dogs are welcome in rooms 7 through 12. There is a well-equipped shared kitchen, an outdoor kitchen, a café, and common rooms with fireplaces, bookshelves and board games. Walking out the door Omberg’s hiking trails start right beside the house. Mountain-bike trails are close by. Stocklycke harbour is 400 metres away for swimming and fishing. The medieval pilgrimage route toward Vadstena continues past the property. The reserve itself is a rare landscape — dramatic cliffs over Vättern, species-rich beech forest, ancient forts and medieval remains, and some of the best sunsets in Sweden. A note on connectivity The signal here is poor, and the hosts say so plainly: this is a place to disconnect from the internet. WiFi exists across the hostel but is strongest in the main house. Run by Ulrika and Håkan, who are usually on site.
