Start your day just a short drive east of town at Bearizona Wildlife Park. This family‑friendly attraction invites you to cruise through over three miles of ponderosa pine forest to observe North American animals—bison, wolves, black bears, mountain goats and more—from the comfort of your own vehicle (bearizona.com). Once you’ve explored the drive‑thru, stretch your legs in Fort Bearizona, a walk‑through area with winding paths, keeper chats, and an educational, zoo‑style feel (bearizona.com). It’s a morning that blends adventure, education, and conservation in a way only the high country can.
Next, head back downtown to the Williams Depot, the historic southern terminus of the Grand Canyon Railway. Built in 1908 and lovingly restored, it still welcomes passengers today with a ticket counter, coffee stand, and gift shop (en.wikipedia.org). Climb aboard a vintage railcar—complete with western musicians and mock bandit showdowns—and settle in for the scenic journey north toward the South Rim (thetrain.com).
The wildlife at Bearizona tends to be most active early in the morning and later in the afternoon, so it’s wise to arrive close to opening to catch the best views (bearizona.com). Then, once you’ve returned to Williams, you’ll be perfectly positioned to board the Grand Canyon Railway for an afternoon departure—most trains leave around 9:30 a.m., returning around 5:45 p.m.—though seasonal schedules may vary (thetrain.com).
You get a full spectrum of northern Arizona’s charm: the wild, open landscapes of Bearizona, paired with the nostalgia and pageantry of a century‑old railroad. It’s immersive, memorable, and entirely walkable (or short‑driveable) from your rental at 400 North Williams. Plus, the timing works—wildlife in the morning, a relaxing and scenic train ride in the afternoon.
Once you return to Williams, the downtown area is just minutes away. Stroll along Route 66, pop into local shops, or grab a bite—though I haven’t verified specific restaurants, the town’s historic character makes window‑shopping and casual wandering a pleasure.
This pairing of Bearizona Wildlife Park and the Grand Canyon Railway captures two of Williams’ most authentic experiences in a single, seamless day. It’s the kind of story your group will tell for years.
