But there is another side of Naples that is well worth discovering.
Welcome to the Bayshore Arts District, one of the city's most colorful, eclectic and continually evolving areas. Stretching along Bayshore Drive in East Naples, this neighborhood brings together art, waterfront dining, gardens, outdoor recreation, live music and independent local businesses in a way that feels distinctly different from more traditional Naples destinations.
And that's exactly what makes it fun.
If you're staying at Casa Botanica, you happen to be right in the middle of it. Here are some of the things worth exploring.
The word "Arts" in Bayshore Arts District isn't simply there for decoration.
Throughout the neighborhood you'll find galleries, studios, murals, sculptures and creative spaces that give the district much of its personality. Instead of art being contained inside one museum or gallery, you'll encounter pieces as you make your way around the neighborhood.
TWiST Gallery is one place to put on your radar. In addition to exhibiting art, it hosts events throughout the year, including First Fridays with art, vendors, music, food and drinks, as well as Second Saturday events and workshops.
The broader district also features murals and public art that are worth keeping an eye out for as you explore.
This is not the kind of neighborhood where I would recommend arriving with a rigid checklist. Wander a little. Stop when something catches your eye. That's part of the fun.
At the southern end of Bayshore Drive sits one of Naples' signature attractions, Naples Botanical Garden.
The Garden combines cultivated gardens with extensive natural areas and offers visitors a chance to experience tropical plants and landscapes from around the world as well as the natural beauty of Southwest Florida.
Depending on the time of year, you'll also find exhibitions, educational programs, family activities, tours and special events.
My advice is to allow more time than you think you'll need. This isn't a place you simply walk into, snap a few photos and leave. It's much better when you slow down, explore the different areas and let yourself get pleasantly sidetracked.
And for Casa Botanica guests, this one is especially easy. The Garden is directly across Bayshore Drive from the neighborhood, making it one of those rare Naples attractions that doesn't require planning half your day around getting there.
One of Bayshore's best qualities is that dining here doesn't necessarily feel like an "occasion."
Sometimes you just want good food, a cold drink, live music and somewhere comfortable to sit outside.
Celebration Park has become one of the neighborhood's best-known gathering spots. Located along Haldeman Creek, the open-air waterfront destination combines food trucks, a bar, live music and outdoor seating in a casual setting.
It's particularly good when you're traveling with people who can never agree on what they want to eat. Everyone can choose something different, reconvene at the table, and family harmony is restored.
Across the street, Rebecca's offers an entirely different experience, with a stylish atmosphere, cocktails, food and an extensive wine selection.
That's part of what makes Bayshore interesting. You can move from very casual to surprisingly sophisticated without traveling very far.
Bayshore's relationship with the water isn't always obvious when you're simply driving down Bayshore Drive, but waterways are woven throughout the district.
Haldeman Creek connects with Naples Bay, and there are opportunities in the area to kayak, boat and simply enjoy the waterfront.
Celebration Park can even be reached by boat via Haldeman Creek.
For visitors, getting onto the water offers a completely different perspective of Naples. You don't necessarily need an elaborate boating day either. A kayak outing followed by lunch or a drink along the water can be one of the simplest and most enjoyable ways to spend a few hours.
One of the newest additions to the area makes exploring Bayshore on foot or by bike even more interesting.
The new Bayshore pedestrian connection links Bayshore Drive with Sugden Regional Park, creating a scenic route through restored native landscaping and wetlands before connecting with the existing pathway around Lake Avalon.
I've written separately about the new boardwalk because I think it deserves its own spotlight, but from a visitor's perspective, the important part is simple: Bayshore now gives you another reason to leave the car behind and explore.
Once you reach Sugden, you can continue around the lake, enjoy the park or simply turn around and make the walk back toward Bayshore.
Early morning and later afternoon are particularly nice times to do it, especially during warmer months.
If pickleball is part of your Naples vacation, you're in the right neighborhood.
Nearby East Naples Community Park is home to the USOP National Pickleball Center, one of the reasons Naples has become such a destination for pickleball players.
The facility is also home to the US Open Pickleball Championships, which draws players and spectators from around the country.
Casa Botanica guests are close enough that pickleball can easily be part of the day rather than the entire day. Play in the morning, come back for a swim, then head out for dinner.
That's my preferred definition of athletic balance.
Sugden Regional Park is another place visitors sometimes overlook.
Centered around Lake Avalon, the park offers walking, picnicking, playgrounds, a lakeside beach and opportunities for water recreation. The new Bayshore boardwalk makes the relationship between Sugden and the rest of the district even stronger.
It's particularly useful when different members of the family have different ideas about what constitutes a vacation activity.
Some can walk. Some can relax. Kids can play. And nobody needs to negotiate another trip across town.
This may be my favorite thing about Bayshore.
It rewards curiosity.
You'll find local shops, galleries, creative businesses, restaurants, breweries and small places you probably didn't have on your original Naples itinerary.
And Bayshore continues to evolve.
New businesses and events keep arriving, public spaces are improving, and the neighborhood has developed a growing calendar of arts and community activities. Even Cars on 5th, one of Naples' best-known annual events, is moving its 2027 show from Fifth Avenue South to the Bayshore area.
That's quite a vote of confidence in a neighborhood that many Naples visitors barely knew existed not terribly long ago.
If you visit Bayshore expecting another version of Fifth Avenue South, you're missing the point.
Fifth Avenue is polished, manicured and unmistakably Naples.
Bayshore is different.
It is colorful and creative. Parts are polished and others are still evolving. You'll find tropical gardens and food trucks, contemporary art and kayaks, wine and craft beer, pickleball players and people wandering around in flip-flops.
That's its personality.
Naples doesn't need every neighborhood to feel the same, and I think Bayshore is more interesting precisely because it doesn't.
If I were planning a relaxed day for someone staying at Casa Botanica, I wouldn't overthink it.
Start with coffee by the pool and then head out while the morning is still cool. Walk through Naples Botanical Garden or get in a pickleball game. Come back to Casa Botanica for a swim and lunch, then spend the afternoon exploring the Bayshore Arts District.
Browse a gallery. Find a mural. Walk part of the new boardwalk toward Sugden. Grab a drink or dinner near the water at the end of the day and, if there's live music playing, stay a little longer than you planned.
That's Bayshore.
It doesn't require a carefully scheduled itinerary.
It just gives you plenty of reasons not to hurry home.
Naples will always have its beaches, Fifth Avenue, Third Street and beautiful resorts, and they're absolutely worth experiencing.
But some of the best vacations happen when you venture beyond the places everyone tells you to visit.
The Bayshore Arts District gives you art, gardens, recreation, waterfront experiences, local food and a little more personality than you might be expecting.
And when Casa Botanica is your home base, much of it is practically in your backyard.
Planning a Naples getaway? Casa Botanica is a family-owned vacation home in the heart of the Bayshore area, close to Naples Botanical Garden, the USOP National Pickleball Center, Sugden Regional Park, downtown Naples and the beaches. With a private screened pool, tropical outdoor spaces, bikes and room to settle in, it's designed to let you experience Naples more like a local and less like a tourist.
