It's the kind of place that surprises people — interactive exhibits, live native animals, guided nature walks, and a genuine passion for the high-country environment that surrounds it. Whether you're visiting with kids, curious adults, or a group that just wants to do something different between hikes, it's worth a few hours of your trip.
The center sits at around 6,900 feet elevation in the heart of the world's largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest — a fact that still catches visitors off guard. This isn't a scrubby desert landscape. The White Mountains are green, cool, and full of wildlife: elk, mule deer, black bears, wild turkeys, and more species of birds than most people see in a year.
Just a short drive from the nature center — and equally close to our Pinetop vacation rentals — is the Big Springs Environmental Study Area and its trailhead. This is one of the best easy-to-moderate day hikes in the Pinetop-Lakeside area, and it's the kind of trail that rewards you without punishing you. The path winds through old-growth ponderosa pines, past natural springs, and through meadow clearings where you're likely to spot deer or wild turkey if you're quiet about it.
The Big Springs Trailhead is well-marked, accessible, and a great option for families with kids, older guests, or anyone who wants to stretch their legs without committing to a full mountain climb. Pack a lunch, bring water, and plan for a couple of hours. The air up here at nearly 7,000 feet is noticeably different from Phoenix or Tucson — cooler, cleaner, and pine-scented in a way that's hard to describe until you've been in it.
Woodland Lake Park in Pinetop-Lakeside is another gem that's minutes from our properties. The park wraps around a quiet lake ringed by ponderosa pines, with paved walking paths, fishing spots, picnic areas, and a playground. Mornings are especially good — the lake is still, the light comes through the trees at a low angle, and you'll often have most of the path to yourself.
The Woodland Lake Trail is about 2.5 miles around the lake and connects to the broader Pinetop Lakes Trail System, which links several parks and natural areas across town. It's flat enough for strollers and easy enough for guests of any fitness level. Bring the dog. Bring the kids. Bring coffee.

The Hillside Hangout is our most popular mid-size property. Three bedrooms and two bathrooms handle a family of six or a group of eight without anyone feeling cramped. The elevated deck with a fire pit table is the centerpiece — dinner out there with the pines around you and the sun going down is hard to beat. It's a solid choice for families who want room to spread out after a day at the nature center or on the trail.
When the group is big, The Perfect Pair is the answer. It's ideal for extended families, two families going in together, or a large friend group that wants everyone under the same roof (or close enough). Plenty of room to come back from a day at Woodland Lake Park or the Big Springs Trail and spread out comfortably.
The White Mountain Nature Center is open year-round, though hours vary by season — check their website before you go. The Big Springs Trailhead and Woodland Lake Park are accessible any time of year, though winter visits mean snow on the trail and a different kind of quiet that's worth experiencing on its own. Summer is peak season in Pinetop-Lakeside, when the rest of Arizona is baking and the White Mountains are sitting at a comfortable 75 degrees.
