Pinetop-Lakeside in Winter: Skiing, Snow & What to Expect
Di Pines & Beaches Vacation Rentals · 4 novembre 2026
Most people think of Arizona as a desert state, and most of it is. But Pinetop-Lakeside sits at 7,000 feet in the White Mountains, and winter here looks nothing like Scottsdale. Snow arrives in November and sticks around through March. The pines get heavy with it. The roads get icy. And Sunrise Park Resort, about 30 miles east, opens for one of the Southwest's most underrated ski seasons.
Skiing at Sunrise Park Resort
Sunrise is Arizona's largest ski resort, operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe. It has three mountains, 65 runs, and a vertical drop of just over 1,800 feet. The terrain skews toward beginner and intermediate, which makes it a good choice for families and people learning. Advanced skiers will find a handful of steeper runs but won't mistake it for Telluride. What it lacks in extreme terrain it makes up for in atmosphere — the crowds are manageable, lift lines are short compared to Colorado resorts, and the views across the White Mountains are worth the drive alone.
Ski biking is also available at Sunrise, which is rare in the Southwest and worth trying if you've never done it. The Apache Alpine Coaster runs in winter too, which kids love.
Snow in Town
Pinetop-Lakeside itself gets meaningful snowfall most winters. The Woodland Lake loop is a different walk in the snow — quieter, the lake sometimes partially frozen, the pines draped white. It's worth doing even if you're not skiing. The town's restaurants and shops stay open through winter, and the pace slows down in a way that feels intentional.
Holiday weekends bring more visitors, especially around Christmas and Presidents' Day. If you're coming then, book early. The rest of winter is genuinely quiet.
What to Pack for a Winter Trip
Warm layers are non-negotiable. Temperatures drop well below freezing overnight and can stay in the 20s during cold snaps. A good waterproof jacket matters whether you're skiing or just walking around town. Microspikes or Yaktrax are useful for icy trail sections. If you're driving up from Phoenix, check road conditions before you leave — SR-260 through the Salt River Canyon can get icy, and chains are occasionally required.
Is It Worth It?
If you're an Arizona resident who wants a ski weekend without flying to Colorado, yes, absolutely. If you're visiting from out of state and comparing it to major mountain resorts, temper your expectations on terrain variety. But for a quiet, affordable, genuinely snowy winter escape with good skiing and a relaxed mountain town feel, Pinetop-Lakeside in winter is hard to beat in the Southwest.
