Fall Foliage in Gloucester, MA: Ravenswood, Dogtown, Overlooks

For fall color in Gloucester, start at Ravenswood Park for easy woodland walking and a harbor overlook, then add Dogtown for rockier terrain among boulders. Coastal color usually peaks later than inland, so a trip in mid-to-late October or into early November is well timed. This is for couples, small groups and dog owners planning a leaf-peeping weekend, and it covers the deer-hunting rules at Ravenswood, which apply Monday through Saturday.

    Key takeaways

    • Ravenswood Park is open daily from sunrise to sunset, admission is free, and the Trustees suggest allowing at least 2 hours.
    • Hunting is permitted at Ravenswood from the first Monday in October through December, Monday to Saturday, and not on Sundays.
    • WBUR's 2026 forecast expects a gradual, lingering color season, with Boston and the coast peaking mid-to-late October and stretching into early November.
    • Dogtown has no development and some rocky paths, and fallen leaves can hide slick spots.

When is peak foliage on Cape Ann?

Per WBUR's 2026 foliage forecast, Boston and its inner suburbs usually peak mid-to-late October, stretching into early November. The South Coast, Cape Cod and coastal Connecticut typically reach peak from late October to early November.

WBUR also expects a gradual cooling trend and a steady, lingering wave of color, a big improvement on last year's dull colors. As of 14 October 2026, that points to a good run from now into early November rather than one short peak weekend. Timing shifts year to year, so check conditions before you drive up.

What are the best places for fall color in Gloucester?

Discover Gloucester's fall guide recommends Dogtown Common, Halibut Point State Park and the view from Stage Fort Park. Here is how I'd sort them:

    • Ravenswood Park: the most accessible woods, with marked trails and a harbor overlook.
    • Dogtown: more atmospheric, with boulders and wetlands, and rougher underfoot.
    • Stage Fort Park: a view across the water when you want color without a hike.
    • Halibut Point State Park: I wrote about it in my Good Harbor Beach guide region of the coast; it is worth adding if you have a second day.

    Ravenswood Park: the practical details

The Trustees of Reservations describe Ravenswood as 600 acres with 10 miles of carriage paths and trails. It is open daily from sunrise to sunset, admission is free, and they suggest allowing a minimum of 2 hours. The park is at 481 Western Avenue (Route 127), Gloucester, MA 01930.

The two-mile Ledge Hill Trail passes fern-covered boulders and is described as child-friendly. The park also has an overlook to Gloucester Harbor and a boardwalk through the Great Magnolia Swamp.

Printed trail maps at the parking-area bulletin boards are free, but supplies run out. The Trustees recommend downloading the map before you go.

Is there hunting at Ravenswood Park in fall?

Yes. Per the Trustees, MassWildlife regulations permit hunting at Ravenswood from the first Monday in October through December, from half an hour before sunrise to half an hour after sunset, Monday to Saturday. It is not allowed on Sundays.

Authorized seasonal bow hunting is by written permission for a limited number of hunters, through a Trustees deer-management program. Signs at the property list the safety rules.

What that means for your plan:

    • Check the Trustees' hunting information before you go.
    • Wear bright clothing on Monday to Saturday walks.
    • Choose Sunday if you want the quietest woods.
    • Keep dogs close. They must be leashed in the parking area.

Dogtown: boulders, stone walls and fall light

Discover Gloucester's Dogtown feature describes a wooded reserve of about five square miles with wetlands and glacial boulders. All development is forbidden, and it was once a colonial settlement.

Some paths are rocky and more advanced than others, and fallen leaves can hide slick spots. Most trails are well labeled on available maps, so wear sturdy shoes and bring one. Maps are available at Dogtown Books downtown or from Essex Heritage, and the entrance described is on Cherry Street.

The highlight is the carved boulders. Roger Babson (1875 to 1967) hired out-of-work quarrymen to carve messages such as "Integrity" and "Be on time" into them.

What else is there to do on a Cape Ann fall trip?

Discover Gloucester notes that most whale watch and fishing vessels keep sailing through October when weather cooperates, and advises calling ahead. For a rainy day, the Cape Ann Museum and Hammond Castle Museum are the backups. Confirm hours and tours before you go.

For a sunset, Good Harbor Beach is nearby, and I covered it in the guide linked above.

How do you build the trip around a stay on the water?

I'm Kate, and our house sits on the river with a private deep-water dock. After a day of walking, I'd come back to the seaside hot tub beside the outdoor fire, or the indoor and outdoor gas fires if it is cold.

The water is part of the trip too. We have kayaks and a 6-person Lund dinghy for guests, and you can book a captained charter from the dock on our 25-foot Whaler center console. The carriage house has a full gym, and the second dwelling there is available for additional guests on request.

There are four parking spaces on site and an EV charger, so driving to a trailhead is easy. Pets are allowed, up to 2 (service animals do not count toward the limit). Without a car, you can use Ubers or the CATA bus, or rent bikes from me.

Check-in is from 4:00 PM with self check-in by smart lock, and check-out is by 11:00 AM. That leaves time for a morning walk before you leave or an afternoon one before you arrive. If you want a place to stay, The Dock House is ours.
